🏖️ Ocean 🏖️ Shore 🏞️ LochRaglan is a coastal town in northwestern New Zealand, located 30 miles (48 km) from Hamilton in the Waikato region of the North Island. This part of New Zealand has kept a wild landscape.
The region is mainly known and frequented by surfers for its excellent surf spots. But, even if you are not a surfing enthusiast, the coast offers panoramas and some little-known gems that justify taking the time to explore the region. The place has a vacation village atmosphere with palm trees and many small stores, bars, and restaurants. If you want to learn to surf or go kayaking in the bay, this is clearly the place to find rental equipment. You can even take lessons with the city's surf school to learn or improve your surfing skills.
If surfing doesn't appeal to you, Ocean Beach is a great place to swim. Lifeguards patrol the beach during the summer months, which is reassuring for families.
Raglan is also a peaceful town where life is good, don't miss the sunset from Te Toto Gorge on the Tasman Sea. If the waves don't bother you, you can also go hiking on the side of Mount Karioi and the beautiful Bridal Veil Falls, 180 feet high (55 meters).
Come to the very heart of Raglan's rich nature by discovering Bridal Veil Falls, this one is accessible after a 10-minute walk in the forest. Lush vegetation and a small stream, before reaching the first viewpoint, which overhangs the 180 feet high (55 meters) waterfall. You will then have to descend some 168 steps before reaching the most beautiful view of this waterfall.
There is a live music scene in Raglan. The International Soundsplash Eco Reggae Festival has attracted some of the biggest names in roots, reggae, and dub, as well as local artists. Raglan's main venue for live music is the Yot Club, a regular stop for New Zealand musicians on national tours. There is also live music in restaurants around the city, so you can enjoy a good meal.
Raglan is above all a surfer's destination, come and enjoy its waves and its beautiful beaches, but also try to explore its many hiking trails that give a breathtaking view.
No, the car is not the best solution to get around in Raglan. The region is known to have quite narrow roads, so if you are not used to it, we recommend you to either rent a car with a driver or to take the buses of the region which will take you to the tourist attractions.
Raglan has an oceanic climate and enjoys pleasant temperatures all year round, except for rainy periods, so there is no good time to visit the city. However, Raglan's main asset is its surfing beaches, to enjoy this activity you have to come when the temperatures are warm, from January to March is the best season for surfers.
